Sphaxx: Premium raw material meets sustainable innovation

Sphaxx: Premium raw material meets sustainable innovation
Innovation

With Sphaxx, Klasmann-Deilmann presents a pioneering growing solution that meets the criteria of sustainability, supports optimum plant growth and is characterised by easy handling. Sphaxx is produced in an innovative manufacturing process from very pure sphagnum, which comes from controlled cultivation and is not taken from peat bogs.

In terms of plant cultivation, this new raw material has excellent air and water retention properties and a low pH value. The fully controlled, sustainable production ensures consistently high quality, reliable purity and increasing availability. Sphaxx will initially focus on the cultivation of orchids, with other product solutions in the pipeline.

Innovation meets sustainability

Klasmann-Deilmann showcases high-performance substrate solutions for more sustainability in horticulture at IPM 2025. The focus will be on the ADVANCED substrates and the Growbag ADVANCED based on alternative raw materials, the Growcoon and, for the first time, the innovation Sphaxx.

“The demand for sustainable solutions for plant production has picked up speed,” explains Managing Director Moritz Böcking. “That's why we are developing innovative substrate solutions and raw materials with a reduced carbon footprint and maximum crop safety.” The long-term availability of renewable raw materials for substrate production remains of central importance. “We are investing in modern production facilities and securing resources so that we can supply our customers with the high-quality substrates they are used to at all times,” says Böcking.

ADVANCED Substrates: Highest quality with renewable raw materials
Another highlight at IPM is the ADVANCED substrate line, which consists of up to 100% alternative raw materials. This allows substrate emissions to be reduced by up to 80% while maintaining the same high quality. In addition to increased sustainability, these substrates offer reliable water retention capacity, optimized air permeability and excellent root development. The focus is particularly on substrates for ornamental plant production and the cultivation of soft fruit, where a high level of crop and plant safety is required. “Our ADVANCED products are based on renewable raw materials such as wood fibres, green compost, quality bark and cocos, which, in combination with peat, form the basis for crop-safe, modern substrate mixtures,” says Moritz Böcking.

Growbag ADVANCED: Sustainability and delivery reliability rethought
For the cultivation of vegetables and strawberries Klasmann-Deilmann has developed the ADVANCED Growbag which is characterized by greater sustainability and performance. The Growbag contains an innovative mixture of wood fibres and cocos, which offers a high water and nutrient holding capacity. “With the Growbag, we offer a solution that is not only ecologically sound, but also ensures high yield security for vegetables and strawberries. We are delighted with the positive market response and the strong sales.”

Growcoon: The sustainable solution for plant propagation
The Growcoon has established itself as a successful system for propagating plants in trays. At IPM 2025, Klasmann-Deilmann will be showcasing the Growcoon propagation system as an efficient and sustainable solution for young plant production and hydroponic cultivation. The fully biodegradable material of the Growcoon forms a stable root ball in combination with loosely filled, high-quality growing media from Klasmann-Deilmann. Young plants can thus be transplanted earlier and the development of healthy, strong roots is significantly promoted.

Company profile

Klasmann-Deilmann is the leading group of companies in the international substrate industry with numerous sales and production subsidiaries in Europe, Asia and America as well as a network of sales and production partners on five continents. Our substrates form the essential basis for the growth of vegetables, fruit, edible mushrooms, herbs, ornamental plants, trees and shrubs everywhere. They ensure the success of our partners and customers in commercial horticulture and are an essential part of the value chain in the food industry.

Our product portfolio includes growing media for commercial horticulture and the production of potting soils on behalf of third parties. We harvest white and black peat from our own and external resources and produce wood fibres, green compost, bark, cocos and perlite at our own facilities and in cooperation with associated partner companies. We also sell innovative system solutions such as the biodegradable Growcoon and Nygaia cultivation plugs. With the online platform Log & Solve, we are establishing ourselves as a provider of digital solutions for nurseries. We offer peat mosses from our own cultivation for special applications in horticulture and to accelerate the renaturation of peat bogs.

In the field of renewable energies, we sell regenerative raw materials. Wood raw materials from our own short rotation plantations (SRP) and wood trading contribute to a climate-friendly energy and heat supply in the Baltic states.

We bear responsibility for people, the environment and future generations. We measure ourselves against internationally recognized standards. Regeling Handels Potgronden (RHP) monitors our raw materials and production processes. Our quality management system is certified to ISO 9001, our environmental management system complies with ISO 14001 and we manage our peat extraction areas in accordance with the guidelines of the NGO Responsibly Produced Peat (RPP). We restore former extraction areas in accordance with legal and official requirements, mainly through rewetting.

The strategic orientation of our medium-sized family business extends far into the future. We want to remain the most successful and sustainable producer of growing media in commercial horticulture. To this end, we are investing worldwide in securing renewable resources, extending our lead in the development and use of renewable raw materials, reducing the emissions of our products and driving forward activities for the production of climate-neutral growing media. We are also gradually decentralizing our production plants in order to make greater use of local raw materials worldwide and reduce transport emissions.

We rely on our employees in all our activities. Their expertise and commitment make a decisive contribution to the sustainability of our company and the satisfaction of our customers. We encourage their development and are delighted with their close ties to our company.

Our company history goes back to 1913, when Georg Klasmann founded Heseper Torfwerk GmbH, which was renamed Klasmann Werke GmbH in 1971. The later C. Deilmann AG, founded in 1888, began harvesting peat in 1920. In the first decades, Klasmann mainly produced bedding for horse stables and peat for burning and built its own peat power plant. From the late 1950s onwards, Klasmann and Deilmann concentrated more and more on the production of growing media for commercial horticulture and began developing black peat-based growing media in 1974. The merger of Klasmann and Deilmann in 1990 created Klasmann-Deilmann GmbH, which has since acquired extensive raw material reserves in Germany, Ireland, Lithuania and Latvia and invested in modern substrate factories at central locations. At the same time, subsidiaries were founded in important European countries as well as in Asia-Pacific and North America in order to have a local presence in the markets. In addition, a network of sales partners was established that now spans the entire world.
